It is difficult to look at your own business with dispassionate objectivity, there are factors working against you, general day-to-day time pressures and the complacency of knowing that it is working, so no need to change it.

 

I helped a friend out recently; he needed an extra pair of hands over two days. We were doing a task that had been carried out in exactly the same way for 30 plus years. As soon as we started I could see a way to improve the process. On the second day we implemented my simple suggestion at no cost and we completed the task much easier and faster.

 

Many business owners either believe that they don’t have any issues, or they wrongly identify what their issues are.

 

When I get involved with a new business, I listen to any issues that they may have identified and try to understand what they do and how they do it. I then go away and research their market, their competitors, their suppliers and their customers. I then revisit and if appropriate, suggest changes; which if agreed I would then help to implement or I may simply advise who next to talk to.
