We have all experienced the arrival of a new PC and how quick it runs initially, then after a few months it seems slower.

The change is subtle, it happens gradually until after a year or three we start to hanker after a new fast system again.

Of course we can get our existing computer to run like new, we have to back everything up, restore the original operating system and then reload just what we really need. This is a significant and disruptive task that will take just too much business time to achieve, so it seldom happens.

Businesses have a very similar pattern, when a business is originally structured it can be a lean efficient operation with everything running smoothly. After a year or three, we see many more people employed to achieve an ever diminishing staff to turnover ratio.

It is easy to see how this happens, too many departments resulting in overlapping business areas. Departmental managers having a view of his or her budget but no concept of bottom line profitability. The reasons are many and common, but as with a slow and inefficient PC, the solution has to be all encompassing.

Businesses like computers need rebuilding on a regular basis.
